Verse of the Day – 1 Timothy 6:12

"Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you make the good confession in the presence of many witnesses."

1 Timothy 6:12 (NRSV)

Prodigal Thoughts: This verse reminds me of a song by the music group "Unspoken" called "Good Fight", but what an exciting challenge from our friend, the apostle Paul. We know from verses like Galatians 5:1 and 1 Peter 1:6-7 that encourage us to hold fast, stand firm, and keep fighting for the cause of Christ, but Paul, in true Pauline fashion, raises the bar for us and reminds us of the reason we should endure a little longer. Why should we keep fighting? This is what we are called to do. We were made for this. Yes, we have to work in order to take care of our families, but that is NOT what you are called to do. That is what you do to sustain yourself and those around you so you are able to keep fighting. It is so easy for our focus to become swayed into providing and working to pay the bills. I’m not saying that working and providing are bad things. The actions of working and providing are neutral, but we shouldn’t allow that to cause us to be neutral. I mean, look at Paul’s words. "TAKE HOLD OF THE ETERNAL LIFE." That seems to be a forceful and intense directive. Eternal life doesn’t begin when we draw our last breath. Eternal life begins when we surrender our lives and hearts to the Holy One.

Prayer for today: Today, I pray that if we have become complacent that we would become nauseated by our lack of action for the kingdom of God. That we would be discontented by our neutral lives like something that is floating in the ocean and being pushed by the waves. I pray that we will stand up! Put on the armor of God and continually advance the edges of heaven into the world we live in by the empowerment and direction of the Holy Spirit! May God’s kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

May God’s boldness, peace, and grace be with you…
