A Week in the Life of…

So this week has been exceptionally interesting.

The Village has had some changes this week~

  • The second Village house is now open
  • We had 4 more guys come in this week
  • We now have 18 guys in the program
  • We are almost to the point to having to open the next house.

Other things this week~

  • Lovely is now 8 weeks along with our third child (9 weeks on Sunday)
  • I am just a few weeks from going to work full-time at the Village
  • I am just over half way through with my guitar class for this term

Non-sensical things~

  • I have been growing my beard now for 60 days
  • I will turn 30 years old this weekend
  • My white hair to redish-brown hair is increasing on the white side
  • People still ask about the R on my left hand ring finger. “Does that mean Ring??”

A few serious things~

  • My Grandpa (mom’s dad) had quadruple bypass surgery today
  • I lack a since of urgency and importance
  • I find that I’m not as good a husband and father as I thought I was/am
  • I find that I lack discipline in a lot of ways, especially around the house
  • I rely on my heart to lead me spiritually instead of the truth that God has given us (hence the last post)

This year will be a great year. Why? Because I want, with all I am, to submit, surrender, and obey God in everything. I want to stop making excuses to follow God’s call on my life and FREAKIN’ DO IT ALREADY!!! And I won’t stop in 365 days. I want for this to continue for as long as I have breath in my body.

Whew…

Will I have a chance to practice this weekend? Ya know, play the guitar and get ready for a few gigs? I hope so. I could use the stress reducer right about now. Then again I haven’t been around Lovely and Little Bear much this week. Why?!? I’ll just say this…this has been a long, rough week. I’m not complaining. There is nothing to complain about…I’m just making a statement. Work was never bad or hard, just very intense and demanding. Lessons went well on Monday night, but I’ve been so busy that I just realized that I haven’t sent out notes via e-mail yet. In addition to the busyness at work, I started taking on some of my future responsibilities this week with the Village…not a lot, just a few. I handle those at night.

I hope that I just get to relax a little this weekend and that I get a chance to rest (whether I sleep or not). I know that Sunday is going to be awesome. We are studying some awesome stuff about worship. Not the type of worship you think about doing at church, but what most people end up doing instead.

If I have time, I’ll fill ya in on Monday (or maybe as late as next Friday…).

Cheers!

Dave Barnes in Birmingham, AL

I just got the confirmation that I’ll be working Mr. Barnes’ merch table at his show on March 1.

So if you go (and you SHOULD go) to the show, then you can find my bald head behind the table selling CDs, T-shirts, and more…

Visit www.davebarnes.com for more dates and details.
By the way, Dave’s new CD will be available on April 1, but on www.davebarnes.com, you can pre-order. Also, on Tuesdays you can check out www.davebarnes.com for a listen to a new track from the new CD.
CHECK IT OUT !!!!!
Dave Barnes is not an elaborate hoax
I mean, geez, John Mayer loves him

Gearin’ up

So I’ve been thinking about what gear I have, what I could borrow, and what I would need to get for playing out…

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had forgotten all that I sold off…It is quite disheartening…

If I went and bought (right now) all of the stuff that I would need to just run everything myself…I’m looking at somewhere around the $1,200.00 mark. OUCH!!!

So until I get really famous (yeah, right!?!) I’ll just have to borrow.

My acoustic (the one signed by Dave Barnes) is still very much playable, but the electronics are shot. I could use the Benny guitar, but I couldn’t use a capo if I needed to due to the type of set up and the frets that are on it. I would spend more time tuning than playing…not good. So I’m looking at Carvin for an inexpensive “Bolt-on” guitar to handle all of the electric guitar parts. I played one not too long ago. I was amazing that it was a kit guitar. As for the acoustic stuff I could probably just mic my Yamaha with a Shure 57 instrument mic.

Other than that, I’ll just need a couple of mics, stands, cords, and my skills.

Man, I can’t wait. I’m getting all the songs chorded out this week…all 60 of them. (That’ll be some righteous practice time, yo!)

So until then….Strum on!

Oh! By the by, this is post number 200…I’m very excited about that.

Behind the mic….

Soon…This will be a new job for me…well…not really a job. More of an outlet of creativity that will be compensated.
I plan to start playing out again pretty soon…I am getting song lists together now. I’ll post events here, Facebook, and MySpace…just so you don’t miss it.
Here are some artists I will be covering:
Plain White-Ts Dave Barnes Jim Croce Marc Broussard
James Taylor The Beatles Derek Webb Otis Redding
Paul Simon Tom Petty Rodney Calfee Band Marc Cohn
Eric Clapton Lynard Skynard Peter, Paul, & Mary B. B. King
John Mayer The Eagles Jason Mraz Blind Lemon Jefferson
And much, much more…
Stay tuned to your favorite Gnome-tastic channel for more info on events….

Lunch Buddies

Two Dollar Fridays…It draws a HUGE crowd. But that’s because it is all-you-can-eat for $2.00 if you are faculty or staff. Today I ate with two ladies from another office and three from our office and a friend of one of the staff. I would say that the average age at that table is easily mid-to-late 30s just because there are four ladies that are in their 50s (or more) and there were only three people under 30 y/o. Anyway…the conversation was absolutely boring, as usual. Two of them talked about this campus event that goes on this weekend. I personally think that it is one of the dumbest things EVER, but I just chalk it up to it being my opinion. One of the ladies was trying to describe part of the choreography of the events last night. She said, “You know, it’s where you bend down and then you ‘pop up’ (hand motions were included) and jump in the air…one at a time…I can’t think of what that’s called…hmmm?” Another lady (much older) said, “Popcorn!!!” “Yeah, that’s it…Popcorn!!!” Me and the two younger ladies just tried not to choke on our food from laughing at these old hens that are trying to make it sound like they know what they are talking about.

After that there was a SOLID 15 minutes that passed by that NO ONE SAID ANYTHING!!! A few minutes later, the “popcorn” lady stands up and (genuinely) states, “Oh, I had the best time…It was great ya’ll. I can’t wait until next Friday.”

hmmm? It wasn’t that great. I think I’ll just take my mp3 player and sit by myself for the next weeks until I start my new job.

Sorry to gripe. I actually thought it was funny…
